Confessions of a cheapskate

I’ve always been quite the cheap skate. In high school I made my clothes and my purses because I didn’t want to pay for them. I learned to cook because I wanted gourmet food but didn’t want the cost. I planted a garden and starting raising chickens because I wanted organic food without the high prices. We started making soap because it would make cool Christmas gifts but really because I wanted the nice chemical free soaps from the farmers market without having to pay so much for them. Ok I admit there is a lot of passion involved with creating things with my own hands but the bottom line probably comes down to the cheapskate in me. So when I saw a blog post about making laundry soap for pennies I got really excited and told Scott “we’re going to make laundry soap!” He laughed and said “why can’t we make something like deodorant?”

Ok this is such a source of anxiety for me! I have always been a very heavy sweater so asking me to give up my aluminum really worries me. Yah yah yah I know it’s linked to Alzheimer’s and breast cancer, both of which run in my family. But come on! We’re talking sweaty pits here!!! After a couple internet searches I found a very simple recipe that people swear by. That supposedly is strong enough for a man (I’ve been wearing guys deodorant for years.) we’ll see if it’s all it’s cracked up to be.

The recipe I used is:
1/2 cup baking soda
1/2 cup cornstarch
2/3 cup coconut oil

I mixed the powders in a half pint mason jar and then poured the coconut oil over it and mixed with a chopstick.

I’ll keep you all updated on the status of my pits 🙂
